Five years ago, the Provident Scholarship Fund began as a Iniciativa Proyecto Arco Iris with a simple but powerful vision: remove financial barriers for aspiring healthcare professionals while building a stronger, more equitable healthcare workforce for Cook County.
Today, that vision continues to grow.
Cook County Health and the Health Foundation of Cook County celebrated the fifth cohort of Provident Scholarship recipients, awarding $1.3 million in scholarships to 93 students pursuing careers across the healthcare field. With this year’s awards, the program has now invested more than $5 million in over 300 students since its launch in 2022, helping future physicians, nurses, behavioral health specialists, physician assistants, radiologic technologists, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals pursue their education and careers.
For many students, the scholarship represents more than financial assistance. It is an investment in their future and in the communities they aspire to serve.
“When we invest in the next generation of medical providers, we aren’t just funding individual degrees,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “We are anchoring healthy communities with providers who come from their communities and understand them. I’m proud that this year’s Provident Scholarship Fund awards mark a cumulative $5 million commitment to our medical students and healthcare system that will make Cook County healthier and stronger.”
The need for programs like the Provident Scholarship Fund has never been greater. National workforce projections estimate significant shortages of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals over the next decade. By supporting students today, Cook County is helping build the workforce patients and families will depend on tomorrow.
“Hospitals across the nation are grappling with severe, chronic staffing shortages,” said Dr. Erik Mikaitis, CEO of Cook County Health. “We have to build our own pipeline. We have to reverse engineer the solution.”
Scholarships are awarded across two funding levels to support students at every stage of their healthcare education. Advanced health professional students, including those pursuing medical, dental, behavioral health, nurse practitioner and physician assistant programs, receive scholarships of up to $20,000. Undergraduate and allied health students preparing for careers in nursing, surgical technology, radiology, respiratory therapy and emergency medical services receive scholarships of up to $10,000.
Named in honor of Provident Hospital, the nation’s first African American-owned and operated hospital, the scholarship fund continues the institution’s legacy of expanding access to healthcare and creating opportunities for future generations of medical professionals. Founded in 1891 by Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, Provident Hospital has long stood as a symbol of innovation, equity and excellence in medicine.
That legacy continues through every student who receives a scholarship and every patient they will one day serve.
As the Provident Scholarship Fund celebrates its fifth cohort, it also celebrates five years of investing in talent, expanding opportunity and strengthening the healthcare workforce across Cook County. What began as a Project Rainbow initiative has become one of the County’s most meaningful investments in the future of healthcare, ensuring that tomorrow’s providers are equipped to care for the communities they call home.
